JT and Kirsten met the night before he was moving away. They hit it off, and although there were reservations about starting a long distance relationship, they decided to go for it and continued to date, flying back and forth from Seattle to Southern California every weekend for over a year. They talked about marriage on and off throughout their relationship with discussions getting more serious as time went by. Last year Kirstin’s best friend took her to Tiffany’s to try on rings and get sized “just for fun” and a few months later JT surprised her with a proposal when they were on vacation on the big island. That night, he took her to a nice dinner, and then they went back to the Sheraton Kona to check out the Manta Rays as they both love nature and wild life. He proposed to her on the lava rocks with a full speech that he repeated a few times because of nerves and then got down on one knee and opened the ring box. That trip was Kirstins first to the big island and JT’s first to Hawaii. They fell in love with the spirit of the island and decided that they wanted to go back for their ceremony, whic took place at the beautiful Puakea Ranch in Kona.

Robert and Tia Yagi met in college at University of Hawaii in Hilo and fell in love at first sight, 9 years later and 1 year into their marriage a little blessing was born. Kainoa James Yagi-born July 10, 2014. Born just weeks before Hurricane Iselle hit the East Side of the Big Island and in Pele’s direct path of her current flow this family came to overcome so much right from the start. This session was a nice break from the scary reality of nature’s destruction for the Yagi family. At 8 weeks old this was Kainoa’s first time not only to the West Side of the island but the first time to the beach. He loved squishing his feet around in the sand and even fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing behind them. They are so happy to have had these pictures taken of Kai-they cherish them. Babies are only so small for so long-he almost looks like a doll in most of the pictures. They used the picture of their feet in the sand as their Christmas card to send out to their families on the mainland.
Choosing the stunning Sheraton Kona for their Big Island destination wedding was an easy decision for Sophia & Chris. Chris’ parents lived on the island for years, at Aston
Kona by the Sea, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. When Chris and Sophia began dating, he began taking her to the Big Island to spend time with his family. She too fell in love with the island. So when they began planning their wedding, there was no question it would be here.
The photography coverage started the day before the wedding, with a “White party” rehearsal dinner on the front lawn of Aston Kona by the Sea, I loved getting to know everyone over the course of the celebration. Sophia and Chris are two very fashion forward people, so I just knew the wedding would be as stylish and unique as they are, from Sophia’s modern blue wedding dress to Chris’ matching ascot, vest and dragonfly brooch, the celebration perfectly reflected who they are as people.

Julia was born an Aquarius, ever ready for new adventures! She’s an orange food maniac, her motto is “life without almonds, yams and papayas is no life at all.” She’s also an amateur hiker, interior designer and professional doodler. Julia is the young mother of five (plushies), Snowball, Coconut, Boo, Xiao Niu and Pooh. Julia is also an avid crafter and made all the wedding details herself! Kentaro was born a Virgo, ever ready to organize and analyze! He enjoys a balanced diet of bubble tea and softserve! He is an avid listener of electronic music and a Beatles fanatic! When he’s not shaking it to Strawberry Fields, he is a web developer and electronic music maker. They are both former Toastmasters members and first met at a local Toastmasters speaking contest. Some weeks later they met again at another Toastmasters event and exchanged Facebook details. After dating and living together for 2 years, Kentaro proposed to Julia in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Inside the park is Stow Lake where they often would walk together and discuss their ideals and hopes for the future. On the day of the proposal they walked together to a Pogoda beside the lake, which was gifted from Taiwan. There Julia accepted Kentaro’s proposal and they were officially engaged! While being together, the two have enjoyed traveling and eating around the world. They chose the Big Island of Hawaii as their wedding destination and were both full of joy and smiles the day of. My guess is that these two will enjoy a long and happy marriage together, filled with good food, good music, and memories to cherish for the rest of their lives. Congratulations Julia and Kentaro!

A mutual love of exploring the outdoors and having great adventures is what drew Keira & James to Hawaii in late 2012. They spent an incredible two weeks island-hopping from Hawai’i to Kauai, a trip that was capped off with a romantic sunset proposal amongst the tiki torches dotting the shores of Poipu Beach on Kauai. It only made sense to commit theri love to each other in the one place they fell in love with, so they returned to Kona to exchange theri vows, again, at sunset. What mattered most to them was not having a wedding but getting married. Theri ceremony for two, attended only by a few sun-basking honu, was the perfect way to start their marriage.
For those of you brides & grooms-to-be who are feeling the strain of planning a large wedding, the idea of eloping might be starting to look very attractive! There is something magical (and not to mention stress free!) about saying one’s wedding vows with the sound of the waves crashing in the background, the sunset ablaze on the horizon, and your toes in the sand. If you are looking for a romantic beach elopement setting on the Big Island of Hawaii, for just the two of you, then look no more! This is one of my faves, Keira & James were married in a intimate beach ceremony at pretty Kuki’o beach. Kuki’o is located north of the Kailua-Kona airport on the Big Island’s Kohala coast, accessed at the Hualalai Four Seasons Resort.

When Melissa and her mom, Katherine, first told me about their DIY vision for their wedding day, I thought maybe they had spent a little too much time on pinterest! They had BIG plans, and they more than delivered. From Melissa’s vintage typewriter to the rustic succulent plant favors, the day was full of all kinds of pretty little things. Melissa, the bride, together with her Mom and Dad, either made or sourced all the the wedding furniture & decorations themselves…..then wondered what to do with all the stuff they had put together…..so Melissa and her mom, Katherine, decided to start an event rental & design business called Weathered, everything is custom made. Their wedding took place at the stunning Anna Ranch Heritage Center in Waimea, on the Big Island. I know that they will always have fond memories of their day! So please enjoy Melissa and Kam’s wedding! Be sure to look for an incredibly special moment during the ceremony – Melissat’s boxer Arabella as the ring bearer!
